FAST Logistics Group, the Philippines’ leading provider of end-to-end logistics solutions, donated waste bins upcycled from used truck tires to grade school pupils in Calamba, Laguna.
As part of its sustainability efforts, FAST turned over trash bins for recyclable and residual waste, along with a plastic bottle collection cage, to Mayapa Elementary School on Tuesday, November 18. Principal Rey O. Borillo received the items on behalf of the school.
The initiative, “Wheel to Give: Small Hands, Big Change,” involves upcycling, which refers to repurposing or transforming existing materials into new, usable products.
In this project, FAST repurposes discarded tires from its fleet into functional waste bins and teaches young learners about waste reduction and proper segregation. Pupils also joined sessions on proper handwashing, basic road safety, and emergency preparedness.
This annual program aims to reduce the number of scrap tires ending up in landfills or idle sites while strengthening waste management practices in local communities. FAST, managing the country’s largest transport fleet with around 3,100 trucks, continuously looks for ways to reduce operational waste.
While there is no recent, publicly available, and authoritative data on the number of scrap tires discarded in the Philippines each year, a 2005 Philippine STAR report estimated that the country generates around 200,000 tons of used tires annually. This figure is likely higher today, given the continued growth in vehicle ownership and road usage.
Building Sustainable Habits Among Young Learners
“Teaching students about sustainability is just as important as providing the bins,” said FAST ESG Manager Maria Eliza Mirasol. “Starting these habits early helps communities create lasting positive change.”
“Sustainability guides everything we do, from our operations to the communities we serve,” she added.
Over the years, the project has reached several communities and schools, including the local government units of Barangay Batino and Barangay Burol in Calamba (2024), Perez Elementary School in Bulacan (2023), the local government unit of Barangay Bigaa in Cabuyao (2022), and the Angel of Love Development Center in Navotas (2019).
The company has also pledged to achieve Net Zero by 2050 and joined the Net Zero Carbon Alliance, the Philippines’ largest multi-sectoral group committed to decarbonization.
